This CCR contrubution to the protest movement was from their 1969 album, Willy and the Poor Boys. It was one of those protest songs that was opposed to the war, but supportive of the troops. The songwriter John Forgerty was protesting the fact that he felt that certain individuals where receiving preferential treatment by then president Richard Nixon.

The song was partially inspired by Dwight Eisenhower's grandson, David, who ended up marrying Richard Nixon's daughter Julie. John Fogerty made a following statement during a 1969 interview for Rolling Stone magazine: "Julie Nixon was hanging around with David Eisenhower, and you just had the feeling that none of these people were going to be involved with the war. In 1969, the majority of the country thought morale was great among the troops, and like eighty percent of them were in favor of the war. But to some of us who were watching closely, we just knew we were headed for trouble."
